Privacy Plus - Tri Lake

Tri lake offers smaller lakes, absolutely secluded, which are accessible from the cabin providing an adventurous solitude and great fishing opportunity. Walleye and northern in trophy categories are caught and released regularly. Wildlife observation can be a major part of this experience with a great potential to view animals and birds in their own undisturbed domain. This is a great location for 2 couples or a small family. 1800 acres of fishable water assures no one gets bored. WALLEYE and NORTHERN abound.

This is the perfect place for 2 couples or a family trip. We have imposed a strict conservation policy on this lake. NO walleyes to be taken over 18 inches and absolutely no fish home. You won't believe what this has done for the fishery. The walleye fishing is absolutely unbelievable! No Northerns over 25 inches are to be killed. There have been recent 48 inch northern caught and released in these waters!

Gamble Lake - "the Sure Bet!"

Gamble lake is a world-class small mouth bass and lake trout fishery.

It has great Northern Pike too!

It is unparalleled in quantity and quality of these species. Pound for pound the small mouth is the greatest fighter and most exciting fish in this area. They are commonly found in rocky lakes with many crevasses and overhangs which are found in abundance in this lake. Gamble lake is the head water of the renowned Gamble river system.

Norseman – from Ignace to Calgary

While in Calgary last week, I stopped by the Petro Canada Tower.  This is the tallest building in Calgary and the head offices of Petro Canada.  Hanging in the lobby is a Norseman aircraft.  In it self this is impressive but there is an Ignace Airways connection.  This aircraft was operated by Ignace Airways in the late 70’s and early 80’s.  Ignace Airways was the last commercial operator of this particular aircraft before it was retired to the Museum in Calgary.  Petro Canada paid for the restoration and then hung it in the lobby of their offices.

I know that at least a few of our long time guests have flown to our outpost camps in this aircraft.

Calgary Sport Show

I just returned from Calgary Alberta – home of the world’s largest rodeo.  We did a sport show there last week.  It is amazing, but even tho’ we live in Ontario, it takes less time to drive to Calgary than  it does to Toronto.

A quick flight between Calgary and Thunder Bay which stops in Winnipeg and then the 2 1/2 hour drive to Ignace from Thunder Bay really makes western Canada quite close.

What if I don't like to fish or hunt?

Enjoying the remote wilderness is not contingent on fishing and hunting. We have canoes at our camps and exploring the shore line, viewing wildlife (moose, bear, eagles, owls, caribou, beavers etc.) and picking berries are all part of the experience. Bring a few good books and some suntan lotion and take advantage of the solitude and peace of nature at its best. Some of our camps have Native artifacts to discover, rock paintings to enjoy and rock formations unique to the area to explore. Try your hand at wilderness photography or write a book. The options are endless.

Irene Lake

Cold, clear and deep. This fly in lake offers a fishermen’s dream. Walleye, Northern, Lake trout, Northern pike and White fish. Irene lake is approximately 6000 acres with access to several other lakes as well. The lake has many drop offs, deep holes and shallow reefs. The open part of the lake holds trout and white fish and suspended large walleye. The shallower south end near our camp holds smallmouth bass, northern and large walleye. The walleye are larger than average for the area.

The couple that shovels together…

In our part of the country we expect snow.  And cold.  Since yesterday afternoon it has been raining off and on.  This in it self is not much of a problem.  However, adding lots of water to snow can be a big problem for roofs.

This morning, with an expectation of another day of rain, we decided our hangar roof needed top be relieved of it’s snow load before it did it itself.

Karen and I climbed aboard, and started shovelling.  After a few hours it felt like we had moved a million pounds of snow.  But I know that wasn’t possible since that would take at least two days to accomplish.

Even so, the snow was saturated and heavy.  By noon, with more than a few sore muscles, one broken shovel and a stuck truck – don’t ask, we managed to reduce the weight on the roof by a few tons.

The lake is approx. 7 miles long and is lung shaped. The lake is well structured with many reefs and rocky islands. Sunray lake is also accessible upstream without portaging. Large moose

moose

A moose hunter guest in Thunder Bay sent me this photo.  It was  taken along the CP rail line in the area last fall.  The rails are 56 1/2 inches apart so this moose has a rack that would make any hunter proud.

We’ve seen moose this large at many of our outpost lakes too.  During the summer taking pictures of wildlife is part of a wilderness experience with Ignace Outposts.
