On Sat morning at the early hour of 6AM I was interviewed on ESPN Radio 1000: Chauncey's Great Outdoors as a part of Ontario’s Ministry of Tourism promotion.

Flindt Lake cabin in it’s pre 1996 days.
In years gone by, a cabin was just a roof over your head. One room, bunks along the wall, mice for room mates, stuffy, mosquitoes travelling through the wall at will, and a hot plate for cooking was the order of the day.
Flindt lake was one of those lakes where the fishing was so good, you could easily overlook the rustic or should I say primitive accommodations. During the 90’s we began a program of rebuilding and updating all our facilities. Now not only is the fishing so much better because of our catch and consume program, the cabins are a joy to be in.

Our summer season is approaching quickly. In a month we’ll be getting camps ready and flying out our first guests. Before things get too hectic Karen and I are visiting our daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons near Vancouver BC. With the 2010 winter Olympics being hosted in Vancouver next winter, Whistler ski hills will be a booming place. As we are not crowd people (hence our Ignace lifestyle) we thought we’d see the Whistler area before the crowds.

I’ve been asked several times to post about some of the history of Ignace Airways and Ignace Outposts. Here is one of hopefully many trips down memory lane.
When we arrived in Ignace 24 years ago, we were not only welcomed by some the best fishing in the country but we also inherited an unique piece of history. This little vehicle was affectionately called “doc buggy”. It’s life mission was to transport gear from the parking lot to the aircraft. It was a cut off 1965 Ford Econoline Pickup truck. It was not a van - never was.
According to local lore, it was purchased new by a previous owner of Ignace Airways and met up with a moose on the highway shortly after being purchased. Of course it did not fair well in the collision. Rather than scrap the buggy, the cab was cut off and it became a great convenience to move gear up and down the dock. The back end could carry as much as an Otter and it was low enough to fit under the wing of a Cessna.
We kept the little buggy going for about 10 years (til the mid 90s) when after about a 30 year career it was retired.
Many of our long time guests fondly remember loading their gear into “Doc Buggy” before and after their trip to one of our fine fishing lakes.
“Doc Buggy” may be retired but it's role in providing assistance to our fisher and hunter guests is still almost legendary.
Even tho’ we are looking forward to summer, there is no reason we can’t enjoy a little of the bounty of our lakes in the winter. It is often cold in our part of the woods during the winter, but as spring approaches we have both nice weather and great conditions for ice fishing.
Some the less hardy among us use ice shacks. As I do not own a shack, I must prove my metal sitting on a bucket on a lake on the ice in the elements. It is worth it however when the fish hit the frying pan. I actually enjoy this time of year when it is warm enough to fish this way without freezing essential body parts.
And yes there is still several feet of ice on the lakes. We are less than 6 weeks from walleye opener in May and the auger engine must almost go into the hole to get through the ice.
I hate to admit it but we managed to land only about 1/2 the fish that hit, but still we were able to take home some of the best tasting trout in the country.
Last weekend was our last show. I retuned from Wisconsin Dells after a good visit with some regular guests and the potential of new guests.
Our show circuit was rather aggressive this year as we added new markets in hopes of counteracting the economic downturn.
In March I traveled with Joe (Seseganaga Joe to be exact) to Green Bay. Joe proved as effective in a show booth as he is at Seseganaga Lake. I know however after 12 hour drive each way that he would rather be at Seseganaga. The summer is coming quickly in spite of the weather. Joe will be on the lake soon to great old and new guests alike.
April 1st is well known as April Fools Day. It does sometime happen that the joke is really upon us with the weather.
Al Gore better get back to his data to re-evaluate this global warming thing. On days like this I kinda wish we could have more of it.
What’s another 5 inches of snow? I hear Thunder Bay (about 2.5 hours east received well over a foot.
