Create Memories

I can't help but think that sometimes we encourage the wrong things in our kids and grandkids. They will not remember the best score on a video game nor the best day they had watching TV. But take them fishing...

It may be cold now, but summer is coming. Time to think fishing.

not to be outdone

Sam's Nothern

Sam fishes with her dad and brother Cole (yesterday’s post).  She holds her own, not only as the only girl in a group of fathers and sons (often up to 20 of them) but also in the fishing department.

This is not her first rodeo and definitely not her last.

Father and Daughter

We see many fathers bring their sons fishing.  We also see fathers bring their daughters.  In fact we also see sons and daughters bring their fathers.

Last week on Metionga Lake Rick and his daughter Marie enjoyed some quality time together.  Rick has been fishing with us for many years and this year the group expanded to 8 with Marie filling in as one of the guys.  I venture to guess she may have out fished some of the old “pros”, but it looks like dad held his own.

I’ve said it before…

When you go fishing with your kids, or grandkids, don’t look at the fish, look at their faces.

Catch photo and release

Andy Filer had  boat partners on Seseganaga Lake last week during a family trip that kept him busy with the net and camera.

“Brad,

Not sure if Dad or Phil sent these yet, so here’s a few …the big walleye was 27 ½” and the northern was 37” (caught on a jig)…both were released back, obviously!

Thanks again for a great trip….

Looking forward to next year already!

Sincerely,

Happy Birthday Ma!

Today is my mother’s birthday. I guess I shouldn’t say how old.

She may not swing a hammer like she used to but even I must admit she is rather active and spry for three quarters of a century… oops.

Escape

On Thurs evening Karen and I managed to escape to Flindt Lake with my cousin Bill and his wife Dawn from Las Vegas.  Bill and Dawn were in the area to visit Bill’s dad and to attend Bill Sr.’s 80th birthday party.

Of course, a walleye fish fry was in order and in short order a few walleye were made to order in the frying pan.

A little while ago.

I have to think my kids grew up in a virtual paradise. Not much use for video games and TV in our house. If the activity was worth doing, it was usually done outside.

1989_ses

I came across this photo the other day of me and my son Mike. This picture was taken 20 years ago this summer. He is married and lives in another town now but still likes to fish with his dad. We are planning a father son get away in a few weeks. Believe me every moment with your kids is worth the time. Quality time in a boat is priceless. Rain or shine, cold or warm, wet or dry, the memories last a life time.

Take your kids fishing, you’ll both value it.

What a crew!

Dar Mor and his crew from Wisc make the trek every year to Metionga Lake. It is nice to see is a new generation of fishermen being developed. The memories these kids will have fishing with their buddies and their dads will be forever engrained in their minds. Besides, what better way to gather wedding speech material than to spend time in the Canadian wilderness. I could write a book about the adventure of this gang and I only know a smidgen of their exploits.

Happy Fathers Day to all you fathers. And think about bringing your kids fishing. You’ll both find it well worth it. Just ask these guys.

ps. Happy Father’s Day dad.

Touch the sky!

Our summer season is approaching quickly.  In a month we’ll be getting camps ready and flying out our first guests.  Before things get too hectic Karen and I are visiting our daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons near Vancouver BC.   With the 2010 winter Olympics being hosted in Vancouver next winter, Whistler ski hills will be a booming place.  As we are not crowd people (hence our Ignace lifestyle) we thought we’d see the Whistler area before the crowds.

We spent a couple for days in Whistler and Zachary managed to “touch the sky”

Through the eyes of a child

For those who think an Ignace Outposts trip is nothing more than fishing.

The Holzer family from Wisconsin have vacationed with us for many years. This fall, after their August family trip, Amy, their 10 year old daughter (5th grade) wrote the following piece for a school project on descriptive writing about her favorite place.

It is interesting to see Metionga Lake through the eyes of a child. As adults we sometimes take such things for granted.

A Beautiful Night on Lake Metionga

"The boat slices through the glass-calm waters of Lake Metionga. The Canadian sun turned the cool lake water to a peach color. I see a beaver building its lodge out of old birch logs, and a beautiful loon calls in the far distance. I want to check out the woods, so I tell my mom to take me onto the rocky shore.

As I get out of the boat, I notice how the sun casts a golden light through the trees the color of glowing embers on a fire. I could smell the fresh pine and I can taste the fresh air. I walk slowly and quietly, not wanting to shatter the peaceful silence. Or was it anything but silence? With no cars running, no people shouting, I heard sounds I never knew existed. For a moment I was petrified, but then I noticed some storm clouds to the west, so we left the quiet island and headed home.

At night I went out to look at the bright stars. There were millions of them, and they sparkle like diamonds. I saw all kinds of constellations. Then, to the north, I saw the famous and beautiful Northern Lights. It was a spectacular array of brilliant violet, flaming red, and enchanting green. It took my breath away. Now I understand why someone once said, "No paintbrush and can paint it, no pencil can draw it and no words can describe it." I thought it couldn't be any more amazing than that, but then a majestic eagle soared gracefully through the sky. Life can't get any better than this!"

Lindor's wisdom

Our chocolate Lab Lindor gives the impression that a bag of hammers is slightly smarter than he is. In actuality he oozes wisdom. Here are a few things he has taught us over the years.

When loved ones come home, always get up to greet them.
        Take naps.
        Stretch before rising.
        Run, romp, and play daily.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
        Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

Caribou at Seseganaga

In August the Dodwell family spent a few quality days at our West Bay Camp on Seseganaga Lake.

Phil Dodwell challenged his family to spot a caribou while on the trip. The last morning of their stay his wife Tammy spotted a bull caribou swimming across the lake right towards the cabin. Dillion, their son, grabbed his video camera and filmed the caribou through the bedroom window as it munched near the outhouses.

Some people get this close to a wild animal only in a zoo.

At an Ignace Outpost camp it is possible to see wildlife in their own habitat. As I have been know to say, "Sometimes the fishing is just a bonus".

Son-in-law or not...

While visiting from BC, my son-in-law Scott wanted to catch a ride to our Flindt Lake cabin last weekend to exercise his walleye muscles. Living on the west coast offers him limited walleye exercising time. I capitulated to his request but reminded him of how empty the wood shed often is at this time of year.

Knowing his next walleye adventure might be contingent on his ability to please his father-in-law, Scott and his buddy Robesy exercised their wood cutting muscles too.

A job well done.

Great time away

A few days ago, I had the chance to do what I encourage every father to do.

Go fishing with your son.

In honor of Mike turning 25 and me blasting through 50 (both events later this month) Mike and I escaped for one night to paint a floor, install a new fridge, shovel out an ice house, and do a few other odds and ends at Hilltop lake between groups.

We worked hard to maximize some time in order to spend a few hours testing our walleye retrieval skills.

This walleye was typical of the many we caught and released. Not being too competitive, we didn't really keep official count but for some reason we did both have a number in mind as to what the other had caught.

It is an amazing phenomenon when the relationship with your son changes from being a nurturing authority figure to one of friendship. We talked, laughed, reminisced and otherwise strengthened an already great relationship. Two good friends fishing, it can't get any better.

Our only regret, is that the trip wasn't long enough. It's hard to believe but after being in this business for going on 24 years, I've never spent more than 3 consecutive nights in the bush.

... someday

First Fish!

The Adventure Continues.

Our daughter is still visiting from Vancouver with our two grandsons. Zachary (3 1/2) has been wanting to go fishing with Papa. And why not, we live on a lake and are tourist outfitters by profession.

Last evening Mike, Zach and I went out in front of the house for a few minutes.

Zachary had his own special Minnow courtesy of Verns Minnows, his own rod and more excitement than I could have imagined.

After bringing up some "salad" Zach's little rod began to pull back. Not knowing what was happening , he handed the rod off to Uncle Mike who gave it back to him and coached him through landing and holding his first walleye.

Considering this is a kid who lives on the west coast and has seen whales up close, he was quite thrilled with his "big" fish.

His comment after releasing the fish:

"He's going to get bigger, eh papa?"

"I want to tell mommy I caught salad and a fish bigger than yours."

"I Loooove fishing!"

Waiting for the hit

Fish on!

Look papa!

It's not so bad to hold.

Congratulations Zachary.

Little helper

It has to be interesting for a kid to see an aircraft being worked on.

Our grand son Zach is quite interested in the goings on in the hangar.

Marcel takes a little time to explain in simple kid language, an aircraft engine.

Sure beats watching TV.
